How much does a graphic designer cost?
What a hire, a freelancer, an agency and a subscription really cost, with the sums shown so you can check them.

The median US graphic designer earns $62,960 a year, or $30.27 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025 data, page updated 27 Aug 2026). That is wages only. A hire costs more.
Here is the full cost of each way to get design done, with the sums shown so you can check them.
Hiring a designer in-house
Wages are not the whole bill. The BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026 says benefits were 30.0 percent of total compensation for private industry workers, at $14.07 of $46.89 per hour worked.
If wages are 70 percent of the total, a $62,960 salary points to about $89,900 a year in employer cost. That is our estimate: $62,960 ÷ 0.70 = $89,943. It uses an all-industry share, not a designer-specific one, and leaves out recruiting, software and management time.
What a salary buys per hour
A full-time year is 2,080 paid hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). The BLS median of $62,960 gives $30.27 an hour, which matches its published hourly figure. At the estimated employer cost of about $89,900, the same year is about $43 per paid hour ($89,943 ÷ 2,080 = $43.24).
Paid hours include holidays, meetings and the time between requests. If design needs on your team come in bursts, you pay for the quiet weeks too. That is the real question behind the in-house number: how many hours of design do you need, and how steady are they?
Freelancers
Freelancers price by the hour or by the project. Hourly rates vary with skill, seniority and country, and project prices vary with scope and usage rights.
Marketplaces publish rate guides. We could not open those pages to verify them, so we do not quote their numbers here. Ask for a written rate and a scope, and compare by output, not by hourly rate.

Agencies
Agencies quote per project or per retainer. Superside says its subscriptions start at a $15,000 monthly minimum on an annual term, which is at least $180,000 over the year ($15,000 × 12). That suits large programs, not a steady flow of small requests.
Design subscriptions
Public plans we checked run from $699 to $4,995 a month: ManyPixels, Penji and Designjoy, all read on 27 Oct 2026. Ours are $1,774 a month for a part-time designer and $3,774 for a full-time designer, flat, with no per-request fees. See the full price table.
Graphic designer cost side by side, per year
| Option | Yearly cost | How we got it |
|---|---|---|
| In-house designer, median pay | About $89,900 | $62,960 ÷ 0.70 |
| noondesk, full-time designer | $45,288 | $3,774 × 12 |
| noondesk, part-time designer | $21,288 | $1,774 × 12 |
| Superside, stated minimum | $180,000 | $15,000 × 12 |
The figures use the sources linked above. A salary buys one person's time. A subscription buys output you can scale up or pause. They are not the same product, so compare what you need, not only what you pay.
Three example teams
These are examples to show the thinking, not customer data.
A five-person marketing team that needs about a day of design a week. A full-time hire costs far more than the work needs. A part-time plan or a freelancer is closer to the need.
A company shipping design every day across social, ads and email. A dedicated designer, in-house or by subscription, keeps the queue moving.
A business with one big project and nothing else for a year. A freelancer or agency for that project is usually the cheapest path.
What moves the price
The kind of work: a social post is not a motion piece or a website.
Seniority and where the designer is based.
Speed: rush work costs more.
Usage rights and source files, which should be in writing.
Revisions: some quotes cap them.
How to compare quotes properly
Two quotes only compare if they cover the same things. Before you choose, put them side by side on these lines.
Scope: what is included, and what counts as a new request.
Revisions: how many rounds, and what happens after the last one.
Turnaround: first draft and final, in days.
Rights: who owns the finished work and whether you get source files.
Extras: stock images, fonts, software and rush fees.
The cheapest quote often leaves one of these out. Ask for all five in writing before you compare numbers.

What we could not verify
The employer cost is an estimate from an all-industry benefits share. Freelancer rates are not quoted because we could not open the marketplace pages. Vendor prices are as shown on 27 Oct 2026.
